Death of a Widnes Journalist

It is with regret that we record the death, after a prolonged and painful illness, of Mr J.P. Morewood, journalist, Widnes Road, Widnes, who was the representative of the 'Liverpool courier' and 'Express' in this town.

The deceased, who was 48 years of age, had a wide and varied experience as a journalist. Trained as a printer in one of the publishing houses in the metropolis, his tastes being literary, he secured a situation as a reported about 25 years ago. The vicissitudes he had to experience during that long period formed an entertaining topic of conversation amongst his confreres.

At one part of his career he was proprietor and editor of a newspaper in Radcliff, near Manchester, and was on the highway to prosperity; but in an unfortunate moment he was induced to became surety to a large amount for a person with who he had intimate relations. The usual story of avoiding liability by the person most interested followed, and Mr Morewood was the poorer by a thousand pounds, and his business prospects were ruined.

Subsequently he held position of editor and manager on several newspapers, about four years ago taking charge of a Widnes journal. He made numerous friends in the chemical town, through his ability and bonhomie, and his demise is the cause of widespread regret. - Express. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss.
