Help to find James Allen please

I have John David Allen born 1828 in Greenwich and married Rachel Ashdown. His fathers name was James. I have been trying to find more about James but cant find anything. I tried the 1841 and 1851 census but no trace at all for the family. Mothers name was Sarah.
I know this is not a lot to go on. John went on to join, I think, the merchant navy.

    Regards
    Ann

I assume you have all the other census, but can't find his early life? 1861 - 1911 seem easy to find on Ancestry.

Yes I have those. I thought if I could find the others then I could find birth or where he lived for James so I can go back

Thank you all very much. That has given me some dates to work with which I never had before.
I will now see if I can find James birth as I am grateful for the death details. Also have a bit more towards John his son

I was thinking that bap is him, they often call James John and visa versa.
