  • Anyone fancy a challenge?

I am stuck looking for a family in 1881. I have them in 1891 going forward, and I have marriage for the parents (23 Jul 1872, Woolwich), and baptism and GRO index for all the children. I just can't find anything even remotely like them in 1881.

I have an issue with them going forward, in that one child was registered and baptised as Thomas Henry, but he possibly becomes Thomas Seymour. later on. There is then the possibility that he marries his mother's cousin. If that is so, I need to merge 2 people in my tree!

    They are:-

    Thomas S Wyatt, 47, Uxbridge
Sophia Wyatt (Nee Wright), 40, Great Burstead, Essex
Ellen M Wyatt, 19, East Ham
Thomas A Wyatt, 18, North Woolwich (appears as Thomas S on later census)
Edward H Wyatt, 16, North Woolwich
Alfred W Wyatt, 14, North Woolwich
Wesley S Wyatt, 10, North Woolwich
Frederick G Wyatt, 8, North Woolwich

    Thanks in advance

That was a good find elaine - looks like them. I had been looking for a greengrocer, and then found the marriage that said he was a carpenter.....should have started with that

MInd you Sarah as wife and Eliza, make it even trickier!

Thanks, a very interesting find and that could be them but....

I've looked at the image and it is definitely Wyatt. However I'm not convinced it says Thomas for the husband.

If you look at the son and the other couple in the house immediately below them, they are definitely Thomas, but they don't look much like the first name of Mr Wyatt. Add to this Sarah instead of Sophia and Eliza instead of Ellen then it casts even more doubt.

I looked at that last night and dismissed it as Carolyn did. However it definitely is Thomas and def. Wyatt.
The boys were def. born in N Woolwich. All the ages are virtually spot on.
Seeing as they possibly changed names later, as you suggest, it is likely that they also were a bit fly about it on other censuses!

Ellen is Ellen Mary Elizabeth, so that fits.

Carpenter is the occupation on the marriage entry.

The top of the S of Sarah is encroaching on the Thomas, I think it says Thomas

It's just Sophia turned into Sarah, misheard maybe.

                Thanks everyone.

That image is a little clearer than the one I have, and it does look more like Thomas, it is just the dot above the last but one letter makes it look like an 'i', but then I can't think of another name that fits!

On balance I think this is as close a match as I am going to get, so will record it. However there will be copious notes attached to the record!

Now to find out if Thos Jnr married his mum's cousin!

Just found the parish marriage entry for him in 1902, and I am pretty sure it is the same chap. Same occupation and residence (place only, street not stated) as 1901 census, and father's name and occupation fit (as long as greengrocer and traderman are interchangeable!).

The image is on Essex archives, you have to pay £2.99 for it, but that is a lot better than the GRO!

So that's another little mystery tied up.
