  • locate a grave

    hi,

please can anyone explain how the letters and numbers and wards etc work in cemetery? I have a record for a grave in the cemetery at the end of my road (for a possible ancestor). It lists it as plot ward 3, section E, grave 43. But i have no idea on how these work. Is there a plan anywhere that lists all of them?

I'm all for going looking for the grave but due to mobility issues and most of the cemetery not having paths i would rather not just go wandering, but have a rough idea of where im heading.

    thanks. Amy

Every cemetery will be different, you will probably have to contact whoever runs it for help. I have found a few of the big London ones have websites with maps. My local one is run by the town council and they have nothing in the cemetery to give a clue how plot numbering works, though there is a phone number on a board by the entrance.

Here in South Australia, most larger cemeteries have online maps.

          UPDATE

myself and youngest son went on a mission this afternoon, we left the newer part of the cemetery and crossed the road to the other part as there was a council van in it. We asked the bloke in the van if he knew the layout etc. Well he wasn't sure on all of it but did tell us "this side" is the old cemetery wards 1-3 and as grave is 1878 it will be in there somewhere (it's a huge area). we did leave the scooter on a path and went on a wander but very muddy and hundreds of graves.

i have re-rung council team and they are sending me a plan out of it so hopefully by the end of the week we can find the grave. (and on another note once i have the plan i will be able to help the find a grave website with requests from there.)
