Can anyone work out the name of the next of kin -- Sister, Miss _______ Carlo.

Military papers for Arthur Carlo, b. 1895 in Oxfordshire. He had at least 2 sisters, I'm not too sure which one this is.

I think supposed to be "louise" but spelled "louse". If you look at the "R" in "road" below it, and trace it and you can see a downwards line through it, pointing right...indicative of an "L" instead of a "J".

Yes it is Louisa - I just found he had another sister, but she was born before the parents married, so is entered under her mother's maiden name (Hiles). Now can anyone find her in any censuses or any marriage or death or anything! - Louisa Jane Carlo, b 1893 in Oxford. The only possibility I can see is the electoral roll for 1929 Middlesex (on FMP) where she is at 58 Kewferry Road in Ruislip.

        Any advance on that?

Is this the other sister you have? Elizabeth Carlo, parents Arthur Carlo and Alice Hiles, born Dublin.

I guess you have Beatrice, William and Hilda with Grandparents in 1901, just Louisa you have lost?

Louise Emma birth is reg in Colchester, MMN Rand and also a death and burial for this name. So maybe a different family. Seems off so many of the details fit though.

Aww same set of records for Arthur Harry

There is a Louise Carl on 1911 census b 1891 in an institution in Kent, not really fitting

Thank you all for so much info on this family - the baptisms are wonderful as they also say that Arthur Sr. was a bugler - his brother William was also a musician in the Army. Also that 1901 census is great, matches , even down to the sister and niece (although said sister didn't marry Mr Brown until 1902!)

                          This is what I have.

Arthur Carlo b 1872 Lambeth, is in and out of Workhouses most of his life. Joins the army relatively young. Obviously posted to Oxford where he meets Alice b.1874 and they have Louisa Jane in Oct 1893.
They marry in Mar Q 1894 and Arthur is born in Oxford in 1895
They are then sent to Dublin and Elizabeth is born there in 1897. All three are baptised in the army chapel there. (thanks Christine)
Then they go to Atherstone Warwickshire where Beatrice is born in 1898.
Next it is to Colchester and William John 12 Jul 1900.

I think Arthur Sr. had been sent to South Africa sometime during 1899-1900. There is an entry for A Carlo returning from SA dying at sea in May 1900. This ties up with Alice being a widow in the 1901. I also found an entry for a possible court-martial for Arthur in Oxford, but as it is Fold-3 I will have to wait until a free-weekend to have a look at it.

1901 - Alice is in Colchester with Louise, Elizabeth and William (thanks Katarzyna). I have found Arthur Jr in Arlesey, Bedfordshire with his paternal Grandmother, Elizabeth and her 2nd husband Mark Francis. Beatrice is still missing.
1911 - Alice is housekeeper in London. Beatrice and William are with their Maternal Grandparents in Oxford, Elizabeth and Arthur are with their Uncle William Carlo in Wimbledon (91 Stuart Road, matches with the address given for NOK). Louisa is missing.

Alice died in Jun Q 1913. I have managed to trace Arthur and William , Arthur dying in 1977 and William in 1958. Beatrice married Gottfried Erne in 1921 and had 2 daughters, but then I lose track of her.

Elizabeth and Louisa Jane are still unaccounted for.

The other family in Colchester, Arthur and Alice Rebecca have nothing to do with my lot, but certainly sent me down a lot of rabbit holes.

ooh I think I found Elizabeth - marriage in Dec Q 1920 to Joseph Baciochi, in Aston, Birmingham. 9 children born up to 1941 . However in the 1939, where she is listed on FMP as Bariochi, and husband as Frank, her dob is 4 Apr 1897, which matches with her birth and baptism dates.
