It always annoys me when I don't get a reply if I contact someone about possible connections. Why bother having a public tree? Is it like a badge of honour or sonething?

There might be a good reason. I googled someone in Canada who has a public tree as she hadn't replied, and found her obituary, sadly she died of a stroke in June and was only 50.

That is very true, Jill. However, when they are active on Ancestry after my message, it is a different story.
Having only recently put a public tree up myself, I do have sympathy for those with seemingly strange place names. Although in edit mode place names look fine, to another user Ancestry's algorithms throw up strange "alternative" places.
