  • Where was Martha Botwright in 1901 and 1911??

Martha Attridge (born 1864 in Shenfield, Essex) married Joseph Botwright (born 1860 in Hertfordshire) at Billericay in 1896.

I can find Joseph in 1901 living at Abbots Langley, Herts. with his parents Benjamin and Caroline. Joseph states himself to be married but no mentioned of Martha!

Again I can find Joseph in 1911 living alone at Kings Langley, Herts., he is stated as married but Martha is not mentioned.

I am unable to locate Martha on neither the 1901 nor 1911 census returns.

When Joseph died in 1924 probate is granted to Martha (widow).

Please, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Could they have separated? Legally she would be next of kin at death.

This is a possible for 1901

Martha Attridge Single b 1869 aged 32 Shenfield Essex working as a Cook in the household of

Stanley Redfern Russell (mistranscribed as Hanley W Rowsell)

Living Broadstone House, Forest Row, E Grinstead, Sussex

      Also in the household is

Kate E Dunkley b 1873 Charlwood, Surrey working as a Housemaid. Think the Surrey address possibly incorrect for the one on the next line ie Milton, Bucks

In 1939 Martha Attridge is living at 8 Windsor St Wolverton with George W (aka as Charles) Smart b 1865 and Emma K Smart nee Dun(c)kley b 1871

      In 1901

Elizabeth S Dunckley Widow aged 59 B Milton, Northants is living at
      8 Windsor St Wolverton Bucks

good find vera2013 there is also a death in 1942 and probate and she is down as Botwright, so all that you found must be correct, probate to George and Emma at Wolverton

Many thanks everyone for your valuable advice. I must have had a 'senior moment' as separation never occurred to me therefore I failed to check 1901 and 1911 censuses quoting Martha's maiden name.
