can i get thoughts please? i have a note from a family letter: "aunt myles d.19 apr 1843, mr myles remarried to his cook in three weeks." would this be a blood aunt? or an honorary title? her husband is "mr" not "uncle?" i don't have the death for the following hannah myles to confirm date of death, but she is the only female "myles" death in jun qtr 1843 in england.

11 aug 1825 manchester- peter miles, bachelor, a miller; to hannah wilson, spinster. both otp. wittnesses: john roe? rae? and john hewitt.

what are the thoughts on samuel's middle name?

i can't find births for charles and thomas on lancs bmd or the gro, to confirm mother's maiden name. any thoughts?

found a newspaper clipping: manchester times, 22 apr 1843 "on the 19th inst, aged 36 yrs, hannah, wife of mr peter myles, of the half moon, chapel walks."

so hannah myles is the right woman. now to figure out her origins....

Who was the letter from? Are you thinking it could be from a member of Hannah's family (Wilson) rather than from the Myles side? Sounds like the author was somewhat scandalised at the rapidity of the second marriage! Peter would have needed someone to look after the children (12 yrs to 3 yrs) keep house and possibly assist with the inn and if she was his cook, then she was already in the household and to hand. Just time to get the banns in or to sort out the licence

Lancs opc makes no mention of it, but the image on ancestry shows a name under "samuel" but they transcribed him as "james."

it's rather scandalous in any age to marry within three weeks of a spouse's death. He must of had no relatives to help with the children, or been eyeing off the cook for a while, i suspect.

The family surname is smith. The letter was written from english sisters to a brother who emmigrated to australia (all born 1820's, preston, lancs). They mentioned all their maternal aunt's and uncle's as some had passed away. Also mused on no inheritance's from these "misers".

"aunt myles" is the only one not connected to their mother, and hannah myles fits perfectly. As she is listed as "aunt" but her husband is "mr", she must be a relative on the smith side, not peter myles. but i know nothing of their father (not even a death for an age estimate, but supposedly scottish from family lore) nor his family.

so my guess is their grandmother, a widowed smith marrying a wilson, and having hannah born c.1807.

It's all quite difficult, hence wanting to prove hannah's maiden name, but odd none of her kid's were registered. She is literally the only clue to investigating the smith side in over 100 yrs, when our family visited cousins in england during the first world war and were given the letters. So need to be on a firm footing with her.

The image was really bad, maybe it was "son of" but i swore there was no other writing in any of the other boxes for names.

James - child no. 5 - buried 1/9/1834 and Samuel (name under his baptism states 'son of') - child no. 6 - buried 23/9/1835. All the children who died before 1840 were buried at Wesleyan Methodist, Crumpsall (Manchester), first 2 girls as Myles, the rest of them as Miles.

Thanks for this. Had forgotten she would be on 1841. Family lore was the father of the family came from scotland, but a name like smith....
