A colourful plea for help - Problem in FTM 2017

I am having a problem using colour fill for boxes in the Publish / Descendant chart.

When I take the 'Select person and all descendants' option I find that the colour fill for any of the three 'Marked' selections is applied not only to descendants but also upwards to ancestors.

Am I missing some option that would prevent that? Any one else run into this problem and if so how was it overcome?
