Gosh, it's so easy finding the records once someone else has done all the hard work and given you a link, or all the pointers as to where to find it!! All those census records downloaded and filed away in the relevant folders.
Thank you Elaine, I'm really grateful for all the help with Sarah and also the reference for James.

I found references to Charles "arriving" in 1882 and 1887, but have been unable to verify.

Think this could be the 1914 death reg for James, as I think the informant reads as J G Clark (brother in law?) and also the father is given as William Gordon & mother as Hannah GRAY.
Hannah's mother Ruth Holt eventually married a Robert Gray in 1837, when Hannah was 6. Mr Gray would have raised her and provided her with a home and when Hannah married William Gordon in 1849, she was recorded as Hannah Holt, but named her father as Robert Gray. He was definitely Hannah's step-father and possibly her birth father too.
Oh dear, I'd better not open that bottle of wine this evening!

Parking this here before I lose it - Could this be James in 1901, still in Algoma? I can't read his relationship to head of house. It's transcribed as brother, but I'm sure it's not that, looks like bathhouse or backhouse or bunkhouse????

Think this is the same chap in 1911 in Rainy River ( sounds an awful place to live, Thunder Bay and Rainy River ) as dob is comparable with 1901 census.

But is he my man?? Well, seems he's a cook and so was the man in the post above (#25), who I'm sure is deffo my man, so I think he probably is. None of the other candidates in 1901 & 1911 census seem to match at all, apart from in name.

So, I'm still lacking info on Hannah Gordon born c1853 after 1861 census, Alice c1858 after 1871 census and need to finish off Jesse born c1860 after 1881. They are ONLY distant twigs, but I always find it satisfying to be able to tie up all the ends. I've made a lot of progress since Friday, when Hannah Holt was only a name and a newly discovered cousin of my gt gt Grandma Sarah Watson aka Sarah Holt!

Think this could be the death of Ollie May Clark d/o Sarah Ann (nee Gordon) & John Giffin Clark

Have now got census & burial for Edna Gertrude, daughter of John Giffin & Sarah Ann Clark.

Seems the Clarks moved from Ontario to Seattle, Washington USA in 1903 and then from Seattle to Pasadena California. If anyone can find a record of the transfer from Canada to USA to confirm this, that would be a great help.
