Hannah Holt & William Gordon married in Yorkshire in 1849 and had daughters Sarah Ann & (H)Anna in 1850 & 1852. My next sighting is 1871 census in Middlesex Ontario - widowed Hannah was keeping a boarding house and with her were Sarah Ann 21 yrs b England and four children born Ontario; Alice 13 yrs, Jesse 11 yrs (male) James 8 yrs and Violet 5 yrs. 1881 Hannah & Violet were in Westminster Middlesex, by 1891 Violet was Mrs George Patrick, lived with her in-laws and had a young child; Hannah was still in Westminster, housekeeping for a farmer surnamed Burch (possibly the same man in 1881 and 1891??) Perhaps she married him? I can't find her after 1891.
Violet and her husband had two children, who I've tracked in 1901 - 1921, also have an image of their gravestone, so please don't waste any time on them.Would appreciate any help with the other four or five children though and also the deaths of William Gordon (1865 - 1871) and anything on Hannah Gordon after 1891.

Just wanted to run this link by you on a tree

Begin your discovery today by exploring the world's largest online family history resource!

Hannah, 3rd up from the bottom, parents are John Dennis and Ruth Holt

I put Holt in the mother's name by accident and left Hannah blank to go round the houses to the tree, but it seems to relate back to the census, Hannah just alters her age for the marriage

Thanks Elaine, however that link takes me to Worldwide and I only have UK membership, so it won't let me view.

The Hannah that I am after was one of the 6 known illegitimate children of a Ruth Holt 1789 - 1857.
Hannah was bp N Ferriby 16 Jan 1831 and married William Gordon at Welton on 19 August 1849. She was recorded as 18 yrs old and named her father as Robert Gray. Robert had married Ruth Holt on Christmas day 1837.

Think I've found the tree on Ancestry, Elaine. Interesting! Not sure where the John Dennis info comes from.

ETA - I see the tree has Hannah married off to David Burley Burch, the man she worked for in 1881 &1891 census

I don't hold out that much faith in John Dennis having been her father! Ruth Holt and her several sisters all seem to have been a bit of a rum lot.
It has taken me years to establish the origins of my great great grandmother, who married as Sarah Holt, spinster, but gave the name George Kirby for her father when she married. Her mother was Ann Holt, a younger sister of Ruth Holt, who married a Mr John Watson with whom she had two children. Mr Watson then rode off into the sunset without further trace and later Ann Watson had a daughter Elizabeth born in the workhouse, recorded as daughter of Ann Watson, spinster. In 1830 my gt gt grandmother Sarah was bp, child of Ann Watson servant woman. Ann married George Kell in 1832 and they had three children. In 1841 Elizabeth and Sarah Watson were with their mother and step-father, but were recorded as Kell. Ann Holt Watson Kell died in 1849 and in 1851 Sarah kept house for George Kell and the younger children, recorded as his daughter in law, Sarah Watson.A few years later she married, calling herself Sarah Holt - the marriage is the only time she appeared with the surname Holt, as from 1861 census onwards, she was recorded with the surname of her husband. I only managed to work it all out by tracing another Holt sister Esther (married as Hought) - when I found her marriage the name sounded familiar because she and her son had been the two witnesses at Sarah's marriage and Sarah's abode at that time had been the village where Esther's daughter lived.
I'd cracked it and thought I was finished with the Holts, then years later I discovered that one of my widowed great gt gt grandfathers on another line had married a second wife, widow Sophia Boynton. I nearly fell off my chair when I found the happy couple in 1841 census, visiting with Mrs Esther F, aunt of my Sarah Holt. I knew Ruth, Ann and Esther Holt had had a sister named Sophia and when I checked the PR, I discovered that Sophia Holt has married John Boynton, who died very soon after the marriage, and on the marriage cert to Mr Botterill, her father was recorded s a Mr Holt.

I've now located Hannah Gordon in 1901 - still living in Westminster with David Burch, and acting as his housekeeper. Thanks to Elaine, I now know they married in 1902 and have found the death reg for Hannah, who died in 1910.
I also have a lot of info on Violet, the youngest child, but am still seeking info on the other children of William Gordon & Hannah nee Holt:
                    Sarah Ann b England 1850
                    Alice , b Ontario c1858
                    Jesse (male) b Ontario c1860
                    James b Ontario c1862
There could have been more, between Sarah & Alice, as I haven't located the family in 1861 census.

                    All suggestions welcome!

Just found the family in Huron County, Ontario in 1861 mistranscribed as Gardan! (I'm using the free Canada Archives site which doesn't allow for variations when searching) There were two more children, both born Canada - Hannah c 1854 and Charles c 1856 +/-1 William Gordon was a hotel keeper.

Thanks TM, I am on a roll indeed! Just found son William Charles on an Ancestry tree - he was a wood turner, worked in Michigan USA and died in 1910. The clincher is that the informant of his death was Mrs George Patrick - youngest Gordon child, who married George Albert Patrick.

Charles, Jesse and James were all together in London, Mx, Ontario in 1881 - Jesse was a coach trimmer and James a clerk.
Can't pick up any clues to help with later dates - perhaps they went to the USA as well??? or the three girls.
