  • Napoleonic soldier - prison Portchester Castle

    Hello to all,

I'm french and involved in genealogy since 30 years more

I have an ancestor who was marine officer for Napoleon the first.

He was captured in the battle of Baylen (Spain) and he was detained in the Porchester castle during 4-5 years.

His wife died and he was obliged to give procuration to his brother-in-law to settle the estate.

Thanks to this, I know his matricule number attributed at Portchester castle.

Does it exist archives about french prisoners :

individuals files or other documents where we can find informations about him ?

In France we can find an individual file at The Military Archives of Vincennes and an other file concerning his Medal of the Legion of Honour to the National Archives.

Thank you so much for your help.

Welcome to the forum Philippe, Portchester is in Hampshire, I have been looking atHampshire Records Office catalog for Portchester Castle around 1808, but cannot find anything about prisoner records.

I have visited the castle and seen where the prisoners lived, extra floors were built inside the Keep, it would have been very dark, crowded and unpleasant. English Heritage have a webpage herewith illustrations.

There might be a record for him at the National Archives in England, but it may not be straightforward to find it. What was his name, please?

It looks like FamilySearch has them, but they are not available online:
        https://www.familysearch.org/search/...tory%20Library

that camera with the key on top at the end of the film description means they have digitized it, but it's only available to view if you are in a Family History Centre or, perhaps, if you have an LDS account within familysearch (I think). If you are not LDS, you could ask among your friends to see if anyone is. If you don't know an LDS church member, you could contact someone in your local LDS church (i.e., The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), they may be able to connect you to someone who would access the info for you.

"Digitization of originals housed at The National Archives. Kew, London, England.

"These records are part of the series ADM 103."

And the records are located at Kew. There are paid researchers who can go there and retrieve records for you. If you're really lucky, there might be a FTF member who is going and would do it, but I don't see many people mentioning that they are going.

Thanks to each of you for your answer.

            My ancestor is :

            Simon LELART/LELARD/LELAR
matricule # 2848 at Portchester Prison.

He was born October, 10, 1767 at Bordeaux
            His military record indicate October, 7, 1763 ... but it's a mistake.

I know that he was prisoner of war during the battle of Baylen (July, 19, 1808) and he was at Bordeaux in August 1814 when he married with a new wife.

Different spellings for his name :

            LELAR in his military record
LELART at the National Archives and Military Archives at Vincennes
LELARD in the procuration to name his brother-in-law

I have no access to LDS's datas.

Thank you so much for your help.
