Margaret died in 1950, leaving Richard as an Executor of her will. (no. 139521)

Looks like Margaret then had a breakdown of some kind - Michael Tarpey and Sarah Byrne (brother and sister?) were made Guardian for her and Richard. (nos 74135 and 74136) which explains why Richard is with The Byrnes in 1930.

Aah, thanks Linda. I think this all hangs together with these two records I’d been looking at as possibles for Margaret Patterson in 1930 and 1940 in Hudson County Insane Asylum.

      1940 https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...=successSource

      What do you think?
All the (limited) census info fits, ie age and place of birth, other than it records her as married in 1930, widowed in 1940. I’d therefore been looking for John on his own in 1930 but not found anything. However, if he died in 1927, that would be why!

Sad story - looks like she was probably institutionalised from 1929 until her death in 1950. Somehow, it seems even sadder once you’ve seen a photo of her and Richard on the passport application just 10 years earlier.

Sarah (Sadie) Byrne was born Patterson. She was John’s sister, Margaret’s sister-in-law, and the aunt that Richard was with in 1930.

She is next on my list to track down and kill off! I’ll post what I know about her in a separate reply on this thread.

It certainly looks like her in the Asylum - such a sad story. But with all the limited records available it seems the most likely scenario. Haven't been able to find anything in the papers about John's death in 1927 yet.

          Here goes with Sarah/Sadie:
Born 28 Jun 1884 Cloughbally, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal
With her parents in 1901 and 1911 Ireland censuses in Ballyshannon.

Married with two children in Hoboken in 1930 (plus nephew Richard Patterson) and 1940, having married David Byrne 19 Sep 1920 • Manhattan, New York, USA

          1930 - understating her age by about 4 years - https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...22&usePUB=true
1940 understating her age by about 5 years - https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...22&usePUB=true

The two children are David Byrne junior, born about 1922 and John Byrne born about 1924.

In 1930 census she gives a year of immigration to USA of 1916, but I haven’t yet pinned down an immigration record, or found her as a single woman in the 1920 US census. I suppose she could have started understating her age when she was embarking across the Atlantic. The transatlantic journey knocked years off loads of my Irish immigrants!

Nothing beyond 1940 for her or the rest of the family so would like to find any other info and deaths for her and her husband, plus marriages/deaths/any other info for the two sons.
