  • 2x great uncle.. mystery

Hello! I have been searching for information about my 2x great uncle, John Stephens (known as Jack).
    He was born on 9th September 1915 in Clutton, Somerset, England to parents John Stephen Stephens and Beatrice Ashman. Jack was 1 of 10 siblings;
    • Lily Sarah Stevens Ashman born 1906
    • Beatrice Emily M Stephens 1907
    • Frances Mary Stephens 1910 (my great grandmother)
    • Martha Matilda Stephens 1911
    • William John Stephens 1912-1912
    • Alice Mary Joyce Stephens 1913
    • William “Billy” Stephens 1917
    • Baby boy Stephens 1920-1920
    • Carolyn Ann Stephens/ Davage 1931
We know that he worked as a chef in Torbay, Devon. He also lived in and around the Torbay/ Brixham area in Devon. We also believe he died in Devon.

Jack was married and had 2 daughters, but I do not know their names.

I’m finding it really difficult to find anything out about him. I’m researching this for my grandmother, as it is her uncle and she would love to know what happened to him!

    Hello Georgia,

Do you have Jacks birth certificate at all? I see from the index that he had a middle name beginning with G, it is possible that he used the middle name as a forename. Where have you looked for him? do you sub to Ancestry or FMP?
sorry for all the questions but it helps us to search more effectively. Also do you know if the last child that was born in 1931 has passed over? we don't permit the names of potentially living people on these posts. [sorry] if you know for a fact she has passed then we can leave the name as is.

Hello, thank you for your response.
I do not have his birth certificate but I know that his middle name is George.
I have a subscription currently to ancestry, I did have a subscription to FMP but that had now ended, so have searched both of these sites for info.
        Carolyn passed away in 2010.
        Thank you for your help.

I can't seem to find him on the 1939 register under Stephens, I'm using his exact date of birth and searching just with surname at the moment. I am going to try Stevens now.. I wonder if he enlisted and that is why I can't see him?

Thank you!! I think he did enlist. I know that his younger brother William (Billy) did.

that might explain things then... once you get the death cert and know where he lived then you can possibly track down electoral rolls, which can help in seeing how long a person [and who else was living there]

fingers crossed you have some good luck

There are 4 trees on ancestry 3 private - 1 of which is yours and 1 public. The public one has no known marriage or children details but it does have this photo. Have you messaged the two other private tree owners?

A great find - a potted history. I did spot a few others - just about him retiring from being secretary.

What a shame it doesn’t say the year he married and his wife’s forename. I see he worked in a hotel in Bath till 1939. I wonder if that’s where he married and the 3 daughters were born?

I tried that but no joy. However I did find a 1944 marriage in Poole, Dorset to Myrtle M IRVEN and there are births of 3 girls in Poole to that combination of surnames.
Myrtle Marian STEPHENS died 26 September 1996 Mendip, Somerset and there is a grant and will proved at Oxford Registry. She was born 1915 so of the same age as John George STEPHENS.
Could that be her do you think?

Not finding a birth in UK that fits her.
