  • Born Spain or Bristol?

A friend was told that an ancestor was born in Spain. Her grandfather is John H Goldby b.1888 Stockport. On the 1901 census he is living in Everton,Liverpool with his brother Archibald and his mother Margaret ,a widow ,born Spain,Spanish subject. On the 1891 census the family is in Stockport. The father is John H. Godby .His wife is Margaret aged 20 born Bristol. There is also a sister-in-law called Alice aged 29 born Cambridshire. There is a marriage in Salford in 1888 between John Henry Goldby and Margaret Morris. Margaret's father is Edward. John Goldby is a widower.
Help to unravel the mystery please

On the marriage certificate, Margaret is 21, a Machinist, and her father Edward is a Bootmaker.

The marriage took place on January 2 1888

I have not found Margaret (or Alice) before her marriage. Thank you for that extra information. There is a big difference between Bristol and Spain.I would love to solve the puzzle.

When John Henry Goldby marries Clara Perry in 1907 he gives his father's occupation as Interpreter. Could this perhaps suggest he met Margaret in that capacity as an Spanish citizen?
