    Electoral Roll

I have very little information on my grandad John Henry Wills and I keep coming back to a family in 1911 with an adopted son JHW right age and in the right area. Grandad marries in 1929 and is in the army, JHW is still listed on the roll up to1934 with the lady in question Rosa King and as NM (naval military) so he is not there. How likely is it that JHW could be my grandad registered in Bethnal Green when he was in barracks in Colchester and married 1929, with one son born 1930?

My aunties middle name was Rosa, she said grandad liked the name, grandma said he was a Barnardo's boy which he wasn't as it was one of the first things I looked into.

Hello Elaine. You say you have BC. Does it fit with the Bethnal Green East London 1911 census for the John Henry supposedly b City of London. I was looking at another birth for West London. Do not want to post it unless ok by you. That child b w/house September 1907.

            Hi Vera
It's the 1907 birth, you can post away about them no problem . Have got the workhouse entry of his mother but of course he'd could be under a different surname but have always had this niggle because of my aunties middle name.

If you are asking why someone is on the electoral roll long after they have stopped living there, there are several possible reasons. If he paid the rates on that house, he was entitled to a vote. If he was in the military then perhaps he used it as his permanent address, again he was entitled to do so. Perhaps he forgot to remove his name from the register when he did find a permanent home.

My daughter was in the army and for many years, used my home as her permanent address and voted from there.

I was thinking the same, same as my son at university. The rolls are every year, and I think have always been? so shouldn't be on there that long. I wonder how they did it then, as the form would have been delivered to the house. been searching around about military in those times, not finding any info apart from war years.

                He didn't marry Rosa?

I am sure you have thought of these things... but a part of me thinks that it would have been unusual to have another property in those times, apart from top brass that came from money.

But can you just sign up to the military for 5 years in those times, if you have a nice place and joined 'older' then perhaps you could keep it.

Do you know anything about the property is that he is in? is it a Council property, privately rented or owned?

Have you tried to trace Rosas tree?

Do you know anything about Rosa King, or are you assuming that they lived as man and wife? She could have been his landlady.

Rosa Allison married Samuel King and in 1911 they have adopted son John Henry Wills. I did some research a long time ago and put this to one side until I saw the electoral roll, am just starting to use them more.

Just wondering how JHW ended up being adopted by a family living in Bethnal Green if I'm looking at the correct bc for Marylebone, Westminster?? mother Gertrude

Slight connection for birth mother is an Old Bailey witness of the same name having lived in Catford in 1901 birthplace of Rosa King

That Gertrude had another child 1905 who was schooled by workhouse

Rosa died 1937 so grandma should have known more but she went on all the time he was a Barnardos boy so I chased it up but she had died by then. Besides hearing he was a proper cockney born within Bows Bells, all I have is a school photo, he is sitting on the floor bottom right second person in

It could be very likely that he was on the roll then if she was his 'mother' as she could just keep adding him for as long as she was alive. Although he would have to come home to vote, it could also be that she added him - without realising she shouldn't, and that he also added himself in Colchester.

she stayed at the property until her death just found the probate, administration to Rose Deag
