Family missing on 1861 and 1871 census

If anyone is bored at the moment (can't think why you would be ) perhaps you can help me find a family who seem to have disappeared off the census for two consecutive decades. I have looked on Ancestry and Freecen and FMP. No sign of any of them.

Hopefully this pdf will load up properly and give you all the info you need..

Thank you. Could you tell me where you searched and what facts you put in? I would like to learn from this and improve my skills as well as finding the information.

On Ancestry I searched census and electoral rolls for Louisa Emily Smith, b 1834 Farnham, Surrey, living in Farnham in 1861, and it was the first hit. Maybe I was just lucky. Can't find her with husband in 1871 despite searching for her/husband and two of the children (see baby Agnes died the same year she was born). I did notice that on the 1881 census, the now widowed Louise is listed as Emily, so maybe you try that as an alternative seach to other names for 1871?

        Hope this helps.

I've just looked again with a fresh search using your criteria and it came up. I must try to use different search criteria in future. Still no joy in 1871 though. I wonder if the whole family went somewhere after their baby Agnes died. I can't think where though.

Just a tip from having Louisa/Louise in my family, and because I've found that the name can appear with either spelling, and also that there is a very common mis-spelling of Loiusa/e or Liousa/e ...............

I search for them by using the wild card * on both ancestry and FMP............. Lo*s* and L*o*s*

The only criterium is that there must be at least 3 letters, but you could use any number of *

One * will find one or more letters

Thank you, Sylvia. I have also been thinking that I should search for just Emily. If there were two Louisas in the family maybe they decided to call her Emily instead. But that still doesn't explain why I can't find anything for the whole family in 1871.

Looked for Louisa E but on FMP and in Middlesex and found COSAR! put the numbers into ancestry to look for Louisa and bingo.

Does that just leave William 1861?

That's brilliant, Elaine. I have so much to learn! Yes, just looking for William 1861 now. Be warned, there were quite a few William Caesars! but this one was a coach builder / painter which I think is unique to him at that time.

I'm still trying to find William Caesar 1861. On his marriage register entry in Farnham Dec 1861 he gives his residence as London so I have gone back to searching the 1861 census for London but no luck yet.

I'm trying to tie up lose ends because he features in the current chapter that I am writing. While I was googling coach painters, his profession in later life, I found a fantastic google digital copy of a Supplement to The Penny Magazine dated 1841 which has a 10 page article in it about coach building. It is so detailed you could almost go and build one yourself after reading it! A fantastic insight into life at the time and written in a very readable way. One of the things mentioned was the use of lead paints and I'm now thinking that this could be the cause of his early death aged 36. The death certificate gives 'Phthisis 1 year exhaustion' as the cause of death. I googled phthisis and it is a form of wasting disease similar to TB.

The are all sorts of interesting articles in the magazine so here is the link if anyone wants to take a look. There is an index to the articles on page 8.

my great grandfather was a coach builder, he was a blacksmith in Cornwall and came to london and set up a business coachbuilding. I don't know if he painted them, or if someone else did. the link isn't working, but will search for it.

Thank you for that, Carolyn. Where did you find the information about setting up the business? Is it just from looking through business directories?

Interestingly, my man was also a blacksmith originally, based in Farnham, Surrey.

I saw that his father was a blacksmith so thought that there was a similarity. They were wheelwrights and blacksmiths. Some of it is guess work. His son, my mothers father carried on business and still had the premises when he died.

                                        Records found -
                                        • ads in the paper - they were Lugg brothers
                                        • newspaper articles about him building houses in Gunwalloe
                                        • Photos of the coaches
                                        • Edwards will
                                        • trade directories
