I'm trying to help an elderly friend with this chap. What I've found out so far is:
25 Mar 1790, he marries Mary Willes @ Christian Malford, Wiltshire. Both are said to be OTP. Mary is the daughter of William Willes, vicar.
23 Mar 1800, he and Mary baptise three children (Francis Charles, Edward Joseph and Harriet) at South Stoke, Somerset. There are no ages given for the children; Charles is listed as Vicar of South Stoke.
1841 census, he's living with Mary in Bath. Both are listed as Not born in Somerset. Age equivalent to having been born abt 1768.
16 Aug 1841, he dies somewhere in Axbridge Registration District, and is buried a few days later in South Stoke, age 73.
Another record I found says that he was "sometime chaplin to the Prince Regent", which is also mentioned in the obituary notices I've found online - http://www.thepeerage.com/p23248.htm#i23
What I'd like to know is, where was he born and who was his father. Multiple Ancestry Trees have him as the son of the architect John Johnson, b. Leicester, 1732 (and died there 1814), but they all seem to have copied one another. There is a Charles Johnson b.abt 1768 in London with a father called John, but I think he went on to become a solicitor (indenture papers on Ancestry).
I've followed his son Francis Charles, and his children, but it's Charles' birth place and father/parents I'm after!
The obits (all the same) mention "M.A." so he graduated from somewhere. Does Crockfords go back this far? If so, (a) would it be likely to contain anything that might help and (b) does anyone have access?
Oh, the problems of a common name, eh?
Anyone any ideas about where else to look?
All help gratefully accepted.
Thanks
