I wonder if Margaret buried 1844 was also known as Martha?

There is a Martha Harforth aged 30 (rounded) in the 1841 census in Whitby, and a Joseph Harforth, tailor, married widow Martha Stockton (nee Ditchburn) in Stockton, Durham in 1838. Martha's father was John Ditchburn, and Joseph's father was also a tailor named Joseph Harforth. Witnesses were Mary Deighton & Thomas Appleby.

The marriage bond is on Ancestry, but the other information is from a transcription.

Stockton is on the Durham/North Yorkshire border, and is about 15 miles from Marske and about 30 from Whitby. Its on the banks of the river Tees.

Thanks Teasie, I missed your reply. Several generations back the Ditchburn & Harforth families are linked at Marske. FMP have many PR images and the internet archive has the Yorks PR Society book scanned so I can go back to the early 1600's. The Ditchburn name appears as witnesses and/or spouse in many of them.That 1838 marriage would certainly fit in with everything else I have found with Joseph.

From the births of the children, her mmn was Stockton.

Mary Stockton was baptised Whitby 3 Apr 1810, the daughter of John & Martha. They also had a daughter named Martha, baptised Whitby 29 May 1807 (as Stocton), who may have had a twin named Hannah who died at 5 weeks.

I can't find a suitable birth for a Martha/Margaret Ditchburn, but wondered if the marriage certificate lists her former husband instead of her father, as the only Stockton/Ditchburn marriage I can find is 28 Jun 1830, Whitby, Martha Stockton to John Ditchburn.

There is a baptism 24 Aug 1831 at Scarborough for John Ditchburn s/o John & Martha, Shipwright, and one in Whitby 8 Jul 1836 for William s/o John & Martha Ditchburn of Ripleys Buildings, Carpenter. The address for Martha Harforth in 1841 was Ripleys Buildings.

William Ditchburn was buried 12 July 1836, with the address of Church Street, although I can’t find a suitable death for John Ditchburn, other than one in 1832, aged 67.

Taking a guess with this one looking at the childrens births.

There is a marriage of John Deighton to Mary Stockton 9th June 1835 in Acklam. The banns have them both resident of Middlesborough, witnesses look like William Rayner and George Martin

Looking at 1841 for Martha Harforth, Mark Earl and Susannah Earl are the next 2 people, a Mark Earl married Susannah Stockton 21 Oct 1837 in Whitby, father John Stockton weaver.

site crashes mean I've missed a lot and some bits Teasie found for the Bushell found in another post have kept me busy. Lots to read through and digest, Geni.com has several partial trees with Harforth, Ditchburn, Bridon and Dickson/Dixons in them all in Marske and Whitby. I've pieced together odd branches here and there working on the Harforth tree and it looks like I've bridged gaps in several of the partial Geni trees. I don't take everything in them as gospel and only done a quick name search but it really looks like I could fill many of the gaps with many of the Harforth family marriages.

With the fmp register images of marriages half the names already posted appear as witnesses, I feel like I'm about to make a 1000 piece puzzle into a 10,000 piece picture.
