I think this is Alices family: 1841
                https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...3-0463/7770381

I think this is Alices mother and sisters 1851:
                https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...363.1543608453

wondered if the son might be with them on other census.

Everyone is a mariner, must miss census from time to time.

I did have look around this morning and found several sisters, there are probably more...
Margaret Applin 1808 M James Drew (he then marries Elizabeth)
Mary Ann Applin 1809 M Joseph Scurr and Thomas Smith
Jane Applin 1816 M George Lawson
Elizabeth Applin 1819–1877 M James Drew
                    Alice Applin 1823–1866
                    Ellen Applin 1826

Thought the son might be with one of them in 1871, but am struggling to find any of them in the census!

This is a really interesting baptism as sister Eleanor (b 11 Sept 1824) is immediately below and on the next page
Sarah - child of James Drew and Margaret Applin b20 Nov 1835
John child of Joseph Scurr and Mary Ann Applin b 8 Feb 1834

So seems like the family are close.

I have also found a John Applin 1805 now
