    hi,
were babies burried in 1917? if so, where/how do i find the grave? ive looked on billiongraves and findagrave but nothing is coming up (maybe if they havent been photographed they not there).

the 2 graves im trying to find are for twin boys both deaths registered in the same quarter of 1917 - Thomas and Robert Lackey born 20th june 1917 and deaths (awaiting certs) but registered in amj quarter, so they were only days old. The parents are Gardiner Lackey and Margaret Ann Lackey (nee liddle/liddell). And they lived in freehold west rainton, also listed as freehold houghton-le-spring.

    any help appreciated. thanks

    Hi Amy,
You will have to check the local cemetery for their graves, some council sites host their cemetery interments online. [or the burial registers in the church for their interments] failing that try the local studies in your library to see if they have the burial registers on microfiche. Lastly it may be that they are in the Local Archives.

would i have to go to the local archives of that area?

I would think so yes. It may be worthwhile firing off an email to the local library and/or the Archives might help. ? Like I say it might be that a local studies library would have the burial registers on fiche. { I know that our LS library has fiche for at least half a dozen town churches in my area } The council run cemeteries records however are either kept at the local archives or the more recent ones by the council themselves. [so maybe an email to them too wouldn't go amiss]

              Hi Amy,
it might be that there isn't a headstone and they are just in a grave, which is where the burial registers would come into play.

I strongly reinforce what DS has said. Gravestones (plus the cost of a faculty to have one erected) have always been an expensive item for the poorer in society, sometimes purchased by several descendants, all clubbing together, rather than being paid for by one individual . Bear in mind 1917 was during WW1, with a labour shortage. Also there would have been no insurance policy to cover funeral costs, which has always been relatively costly. Villagers sometimes erected a wooden cross as a place marker in the village churchyard, but in time these rotted away.
All village churchyards have burial plans marking graves and who is interred by them; if the burial register has not been filmed, then I would write to one of the churchwardens of the parish and ask if they would be kind enough to look at the plan. Also. the burial register for 1917 may still be in use - the one at our church is! - and so may not have yet been deposited at the local record office.

Yep that's true Jay, but I'm not sure whether Amy means a council cemetery or a churchyard, but the burial plan is a good idea for the churchyard.

If they died very soon after birth, they may have been buried in a coffin with an unrelated adult. Undertakers often did this as a kindness to poor families who couldn't afford either a funeral or a burial plot. Do you have their exact dates of death, as that might be another angle to investigate, although whether that fact would be recorded I'm not sure.

                              hi,
thanks everyone for replies. i am awaiting their death certs for exact date. Birth was 20th june 1917 and deaths are registered in the same quarter -Registration Date Apr 1917 Registration Quarter Apr-May-Jun Registration districtHoughton Inferred County Durham Volume10a Page570 (both).
as for church or council graveyard i have no idea, what would have been their grandfather is in the churchyard in west rainton, and their is an overflow across the road. there are others very close in distance (few miles)

the_colour_silver_82 if you dont mind that would be great thank you. what extra info do you require?

Amy when you say 'freehold houghton le spring' do you mean that they owned the place? or it was a place? [i'm a bit confused]

freehold was a place near west rainton houghton le spring, it has since been changed to a new name and new housing estate built there.
