"U" under sex.....???

  • "U" under sex.....???

    Hi All,

    First "Happy New Year to All"

    On SP when looking for a birth, found "U" where sex of child (M or F).

    What's it's meaning....Please.

        I haven't come across it before, but I would imagine that it is short for something like unknown - either that column of the actual certificate is unreadable or the baby's sex couldn't be determined for whatever reason.

          i had one that had ZZZZZ Ellis...when i posted a thread ,someone replied zzzz means "unreadable"....could this "u" mean unreadable.?...allan

            The FAQ page on SP gives "U" as "Unstated" (for cases where the written entry is unclear or where the name is one which could be either male or female - example given is Marion!).

                :D I've seen this too but actually written in the parish records.

                My most worrying is baby girl born late 19th centuary who is down as being male she was definitely female though. Must check the register of corrected entried to see why they put male instead of female

                  I have a Joseph who appears on two censuses as a son - in a census between these two there is no sign of him, but there is a Mary, daughter, the same age!
