Difficult to make out the middle one, but the top one, where he is called John, says that the information has been "deposited by" (I think they mean deposed by) the father, who is sick.

As to why he called himself Jeremiah - who knows? He made his mark, I notice, so wouldn't have been able to read the name anyway, to correct the Registrar.

Unless you can find a Jeremiah AND a John, I would be confident they are one and the same person.

OC - No, that top one says "deputed by the father who is sick", i.e. he sent John Birrell, the sexton, to register the birth (and the death) on his behalf.

If his real name was Jeremiah then it could well be that John Birrell didn't know that and thought he was called John.

Thankyou, maybe teh vicars wife took her in while she had her baby?

in 1871 the family are still in Scotland living in a caravan, can't find them 51, 61 or 81 census so think they were gypsies. 1891 Eliza is widowed and living in Northshields with her sons who are fairground propietors

I've just been looking at it again - do you think the line above Vicarage says In a caravan? the word after vicarage is Aberdeen
