    Musket branded with J. Simpson

I am amongst other things a collector of Militaria & Antique Arms, I have a Indian pattern musket (Brown Bess) made by Robert Wheeler in London with inspectors marksfor 1799 which has been branded with the name J. Simpson and a second line which means nothing to me, it contains a series of letters and numbers
    ??URN-188.
I purchased it in New England USA it is possible that it was a musket captured during the war of 1812 between the USA and Great Britain.
Any ideas as to its history or does it have a family connection to a soldier from your family who fought in the 1812 war.

I wonder if the number relates to the soldier's muster roll number?

      That is quite possible Margaret.
It might even relate to a regiment (say 1st 88th The Rangers for instance) a Militia Regiment, or a ship as several Naval engagements took place during the 1812.
