1st March 1864 Punished H. Wicher for leaving earlier yesterday having made inquiries and found he ought not to have done so. Joseph Stone punished for calling names.
2nd March 1864 Noticed that Table Books are required for the second class. Kept several for not learning the Catechism.
3rd March 1864 Admitted a new scholar Robert Peck from a Private School in London (Fitzroy Square). Punished Rich. Harland* for calling names and Anne Cook and Helen Leppard for quarrelling and fighting.
4th March 1864 Kept James Durtnell for disobedience. Returned for regular attendance 3/2 to. (sic) William Packham left at 3.30p.m.
7th March 1864 98 present, wet morning. School pence 11/0. Emma Bennett’s behaviour very bad. Kept at noon. Must pay more attention to the Fourth Class Writing.
8th March 1864 105 present – took 1/0 extra school pence. Punished Kate Brown and Polly Newnham for bad conduct in church on Sunday.
9th March 1864 Complaint that some of the “first class” boys threw Saml. Upton down amongst the mud on the road. Harry Gover and Charles Newnham punished for it.
10th March 1864 Jethro Coomber punished for throwing stones. Fourth Class kept ΒΌ hour for bad behaviour.
11th March 1864 Took some marbles from Willm. Burtenshaw for playing during school hours. Returned 2/0 for regularity of attendance. Kept Sophia Holland for Home Lesson.
14th March 1864 Present 107. School pence 14/0. Admitted two fresh scholars. William Newnham and Harriet Newnham.
15th March 1864 Punished Ockenden for calling names. Fred Upton absent again, make inquiries. Took the 3rd Class in Arithmetic and found the majority perfect in Simple Addition.
16th March 1864 Fred Upton absent without leave. Mrs Knight explained that she must keep one of her girls away one day every week.
17th March 1864 Inquiry made whether Rhoda Chatfield’s sister might come on Monday next: permission granted. Ockenden & Billy Burtenshaw both absent in the afternoon.
18th March 1864 Returned for regular attendance 2/5. This week’s attendance has been good throughout: over 110 present every half day. Girls noisy toward evening. Fourth Class kept in half hour.
21st March 1864 Admitted one new scholar Alice Chatfield aged 5 yrs 7mnths. 108 present. Scholars Pence 15/2. Thomas Ockenden, James Durtnall, Charles and Thomas Tidey absent with leave in the afternoon.
22nd March 1864 Present 112. Find Third Class greatly improved in Reading. Punished several for not learning spelling. Fourth Class very noisy. Ockenden showing a book written “out of his own head” caused a great disturbance.
23rd March 1864 Sent Helen Lepperd back to third class having been kept away and neglected her work.
24th March 1864 Returned 3/0 for regular attendance. Boys applied for permission to leave school at 11a.m. to see the flag turned out. Refused, being “Passion Week”. Next week being Easter Week to be holiday.
March 27th to April 2nd Easter Vacation.
