You can use details for birthplace on the individual census record set search pages, found from the A-Z of Record sets, but you can only search one census at a time from those pages. |
SEARCHING MORE THAN ONE CENSUS USING BIRTHPLACE N.B. If you search from the category page, you do not get the optional keywords box at the bottom of the page. You also do not get the birthplace showing in your results. TIP: You can also search by occupation across one or more censuses using the optional keywords box. 1. Select Census, land & surveys from the green search menu. 2. Select the Census page from the All Collections drop down menu: ![]() Census search page: ![]() Example: Search across all censuses for George Lewcock born in 1841 (just before the 1841 census), in Farnham, Surrey. N.B. There is no Birthplace field as the Where box refers to the person's location in the census returns, so at the time of writing, you need to type the person's birthplace into the Optional keywords field at the bottom of the screen. ![]() 1. To select which census you want to search, click on Browse record set. 2. Type 18 in the search filters box and tick the years which you want to search. 3. Press Apply filters. 4. Click on Browse record set again and type 19 in the search filters box and tick the other two records sets. ![]() The Names of all the census record sets you have selected will appear UNDER the box. ![]() Having filled in the name and year of birth, these were the results of the search, sorted by "Record set ascending" to get them into date order. ![]() There were no results for 1871 or 1891, so I deleted all the filters apart from those, and searched again with no birthplace specified. With a more common name, I could have put the county into the keyword box. This brought up the missing results - in both cases, the birthplace had been given as Surrey. Back to Searching findmypast |

The National Registration Act 1939 established a National Register which began on 29th September 1939. The data collected was used to produce up-to-date population statistics and identification cards as well as helping to administer conscription.
