| County Louth is on the east coast of Ireland, on the border with Northern Ireland and is the smallest of all Irish counties. The county town is Dundalk which is also the largest town. Boyne Viaduct at Drogheda was the seventh largest bridge of its kind in the world. Musical family, "The Corrs", were born in Dundalk. |
| County Longford is one of Ireland's smallest counties. A mainly agricultural economy encompassing cattle and sheep rearing, and the cultivation of oats and potatoes. Although landlocked, much of Longford comprises of lakeland, bogland, pastureland, and wetland in its low-lying landscape. Co. Longford is the birthplace of the writer, Oliver Goldsmith. |
| County Leitrim has a short length of coastline but is a mostly inland County with hills, lofty mountains and deep valleys. Divided into North and South Leitrim by the river Shannon and Lough Allen, the county town, Carrick-on-Shannon, is the largest town in Leitrim. The county was very badly affected by the Great Famine of 1845-49. |
| County Laois was created in 1556 by Mary I of England as Queen's County. Laois received its current Irish language name following the Irish War of Independence although is known historically as a place where a large number of Quakers settled, and is now home to a Quaker museum, as well as Donaghmore Workhouse and Famine Museum, which remembers the great famine. | County Kilkenny is located in the south east of Ireland. Inhabitants of Kilkenny are sometimes known as Kilkenny cats, although the reason for this has various origins. Kilkenny is, in the greater part, countryside - farmland dotted with medieval ruins, stone walls, and many historic monuments and pretty villages. |
| County Kildare is located to the southwest of Dublin. The county town is Naas although the town called Kildare is the oldest town in the county. During World War II, Naas was the site of Ireland's prisoner of war camp. |
| County Galway is located on the west coast of Ireland and is home to Lough Corrib, the largest lake in the whole of Ireland. Just off the mainland are the Aran Islands, famous for wool, traditionally knitted into cabled garments. |
| Fingal is a new county in the Republic of Ireland, formed from part of the historic county of Dublin. Mainly a horticultural area with over 30 miles of beaches, Fingal also boasts the beautiful Talbot Botanic Gardens, with plant collections from all corners of the globe. |
| County Donegal is a county in the northwest of Ireland and it is one of three counties in the province of Ulster that does not form part of Northern Ireland. With two mountain ranges and a rugged coastline Donegal also has long sandy beaches and extensive areas of rolling dunes. Traditional Irish folk music is still very much part of the culture. |
| County Cavan is one of three counties situated in the province of Ulster without actually being a part of Northern Ireland. With 365 lakes County Cavan is a mostly rural county with charming villages, historic monuments and beautiful countryside. |
