when you have your tree open in front of you goto 'tree settings' next to 'tree settings' there are 'privacy settings' click on that and click on the circle for 'private' then save changes

There are two flavors of "private" on ancestry trees:
* other members can't see the details of the tree, but your tree will be a suggestion if any of its elements match with a search. It would give the match's name, tree name, your ancestry id, and a contact button
* totally private, nothing shows up on a search.
The default is the first - you have to find another box if you want the second.
Last time I changed the status of a tree to the latter choice, ancestry told me that it would take a week or so for the tree to stop showing up in searches - although the tree itself would not be available.
