  • Stillbirths help needed

I am at present compiling The Historic Stillbirth Register (covering the years 1551 to 2005). I would appreciate any help with, or leads to stillbirth records that anyone has.
Stillbirths are often recorded in Parish Registers.
    Cheers
    Guy

Guy, there is a contact name and address for Teresa Williams on our Stillbirths page in the reference library - not sure if you are aware of the index she is compiling.

You probably already know this, Guy, but there are numerous stillbirths recorded in the register of Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester.

I have transferred my listing of registers searched for the Historic Stillbirth Register to a computer readable format and uploaded it to the site at

Thanks to all those who have helped by supplying records, the database runs to over 10,000 entries now.
                    Cheers

St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn (later the Cathedral) lists many burials of abortive infants, also unnamed infants - I presume these stillborn as no gender is given.

An excellent work Guy...any plans to list by County, please?

The Historic Stillbirth Register is arranged by county then by date in order to be useful to those studying stillbirths and (locality) causes of stillbirth.
                          Cheers

Guy, I am at present collecting four surnames from the PRs of Greystoke, Cumberland. I am noticing that there are frequent entries for stillbirths in the dates I am looking through at the moment; 1559 to 1600. Some of the entries are even for "stillborn bastard" children of two named people.

I'm sorry I don't have time to collect them all myself (there are probably over 100 so far) but maybe you want to make a reference in your collection.

Thanks for the heads up Anne, I will have to get a copy of those registers.

Cuckfield parish council in Sussex has put scans of the burial registers from 1855-2009 on their website, there are many stillbirths but you have to go through page by page

I found a mention of a stillbirth in the grave records of a plot sent to me by a cemetary office in Forfar. No name or gender though.
