  • Can anyone see William on the 91/01?

    Hi all,

Can anyone spot William Bromley for me on the 1891 or 1901 census'. I am completely at a loss as to where he is.

He was born on the 12th June 1860, at Church Gresley in Derbyshire, the son of Jonathan Clee Bromley and Mary Parker.

On the 1861 census he is living with his parents at Gresley. 1861 Census

On the 1871 census he is still living at Gresley with his parents. 1871 Census

By the time of the 1881 census he has moved out of his father's house, and is now a border, but still living in Gresley. His place of birth also now reads Swadlincote, which was where the Bromley family resided before moving to Church Gresley. 1881 Census

Then he goes missing for two decades, in which time he marries. I have no idea what the time of his wife was, or if he had any children.

The 1911 census shows William as a Widower now residing in Pwllheli, Caernarvonshire. 1911 Census

William died in 1926, and is buried at Denio (just outside Pwllheli). The person who registered his death is listed as the Occupier, so I persume he died in a Workhouse/Hopsital and had no family in the area to register the death.

Any help on my conundrem, exspecially locating William's wife would be much received (I know it's a long shot as Bromley is a common name).

    Many Thanks,
    Tippin

There are a few options to consider with 'Bramley' as a surname.

      Hi AlanC,

Thanks for your imput. I had thought of looking under different names, but still cannot see William anywhere.

I feel that this is now a lost cause, and will never know what happened between William's birth and death.

This could be the 1901 census for Mary, shown as married, but no William present on census.

WOW, thank you all for the wonderful help.
I think I will have to order the marriage certificate of William & Mary Ann Arrowsmith to make sure though before I add it to my tree, but it all looks good!!!!

Many Thanks once again for the help.

Thanks to everyone once again for looking into this for me.

I have had a look on the earlier census' for a William Bromley born around 1860 with a father Jonathan, and can only find the one so the marriage does look good. Thank you so much for finding that for me Elaine, I did not realise FamilySearch has records that late!

Also thank you to both Elaine's for finding Mary on the Census's for me. It's just a shame that Mary's relationships on the 1901 census are all over the place! I have not been able to find a John on the GRO born around 1894, and can't believe that he is not Mary's son. William had no brothers so I do not know where a cousin Bromley living with the Arrowsmith's could come from, and I don't think and members of the extended family managed to find their way over to Stoke. I wonder where William was during those thirty years, I guess there could he a hundred and one reasons as to why he was not on the census', perhaps he was a travelling salesman?

Many thanks once again to everyone who helped look for the illusive William Bromley. I doubt I would have been able to find his wife without you all!
