Hi I wonder if anyone wants a challenge.
This is complicated so I will do my best to explain giving as much information as I can.
Eliza Codd/Coad (the family name changes c1861 ) was born in Onehouse Suffolk 1840. Her parents were James Codd and Sophia Blundell. I have Eliza on the 1851 census and 1861 census returns. In 1861 she is living in Rotherham. I presume she moved to Rotherham with her parents as they are also living in Rotherham although they are not living in the same village – Eliza is a Servant.
I can’t find Eliza in 1871, however in 1881 she is living and working in Leeds as a Lady’s maid. I think she marries Alaxander Goucke in 1882(Leeds). My concerns are that she ‘looses’ 9 years. Her age on her marriage certificate is given as 35. However, this may be because her husband is 7 years younger than Eliza. Also, her father James is described as a Farm Baliff. On the 1861 census, the last census before James’ death, James is an agricultural labourer. Does this lady like to manipulate the facts? The marriage is on Ancestry Parish records.
The couple can be found on the 1891 and 1911 census. In 1891 they are living in Leicester ( surname transcribed as Goncke). In 1911 they are living in Headingley Leeds. I have not found them on the 1901 census but with a name like Coucke it is ripe for mistranscription. On the 1891 and 1911 census returns Eliza’s niece Harriet Calthorpe(born 1870) is living with the couple.
My real question is who was her mother? Niece suggests she is Eliza’s sister as both Eliza and Harriet came from Suffolk – Alaxander came from Ireland. But I cannot find out who Harriet’s mother was. Eliza had 4 known sisters – Mary, Salome, Sophia and Elizabeth. Mary died 1867, Salome died 1868, Sophia died 1912. Elizabeth is the only one I cannot track after 1851 so I don’t know if she died or married. I cannot find a Codd/Coad Calthorpe (or derivatives)marriage.
To summarise I am looking for Eliza 1871, Eliza and Alaxander 1901 census, and would like to know how Harriet and Eliza are related.
