Blurry photo scans

Although I haven't altered the settings on my scanner, photos where the original is very sharp are now quite blurred when scanned. Oddly, the back of a postcard and it's text are as sharp as ever and it was set to colour photos for both. Any suggestionsplease?

I'm not printing anything, just scanning & looking at the scans on screen.
