  • Call the Midwife books

    Hi

If anyone has any East End relatives, these books are a great. However there is a lot of information, especially in the last book which has personal stories about the workhouse, several of the wars, as well as general life in the late 1800's- mid 1900's (including the story of one family who lost all but 1 child to TB)

I understand that conditions written about in the book could also be applied to many areas of Glasgow as well, as Mary Cronk MBE knew the author and once visited the east end when considering where to work.

Are the midwives & patients all fictitious, or real people of the time??? If the latter, is it possible to find a list of either of them?

Real people but they have been given fictitious names and some of the stories are "composite facts".

I think the conditions described in the books were more or less universal in England at that time, obviously depending on your position in society.
