  • Searchingo for a baptism, circa 1700

Looking for the baptism of John Mason, s/o John Mason, Porter

John jr apprenticed in 1714/15, so his birth was probably around 1700.

At the time of his apprenticeship, and when he marries, he reports he is of the parish of St Dunstans in the West, London.

and missing the record of his first marriage, the baptism of his two children.... oh boy.

    THANKS!

So as not to repeat any searches you might have done, have you looked through the images of the parish registers for St. Dunstans in the West?

Was trying to answer this when the system's hiccups started!

I have now looked thru St Dunstan's in the West - from about 1698 thru 1702. There a few records that are beyond hope, and the general difficulty of reading freehand across the page, but, otherwise, no, I don't think he's there.

Two possible marriages at the same church as in previous post.

Isn't 14 a bit old for an apprenticeship? I thought they usually started at 10 (but what was he apprenticed to!).

The one thing you can be sure of is that he WAS baptised - they wouldn't take an unbaptised apprentice.

              Oh, my bad!
I think I had matched him previously to a baptism in 1710 - and that child's father was John.

The apprentice I like best had a father Samuel.

And, no, I've thought the age was typically 14. That's what I've seen my other guild apprentices start around.

Thanks, Val - I think I've found a possible one to Elizabeth Bates in 1725, but I can't find any issue from that marriage. It's by license, so maybe I can find out what parish he resided in then.
