POssibly because of the war ? - I noticed that in the first world war, a lot of the probate I was looking for were registered in Llandudno, the registry might have moved out because of the bombs/risk etc ??

Good thinking ChrisJ, sounds like a very reasonable explanation

If it was in Wales then it might be on line with the National Library of Wales, I found lots of wills and marriage bonds on line there and they are readable on line too. They sent me all the photo copies too, many many pages and lots of the wills and marriage bonds very cheap.

Edit: looks like they may only go up to 1941

Having gathered a lot of Probate details for my One Name Study I can confirm that many wartime wills were probated in Wales even when the testator lived in south east England.
I don't think there is much significance in the location of the Probate Office in more modern times. My Dad lived in York but the will was proved in Edinburgh.

If I'd been a bit quicker I would have said "there's a war on, you know"! I have wartime London and other "down south" deaths with probate in Llandudno and other places north of Watford.
