  • Did John dump Sarah?

New info on an old problem has come to light but I need some suggestions please.

John Goulson married Sarah Haynes 02 May 1838, Bottesford Church, Leicestershire.

In 1848 an article was posted in the Stamford Mercury stating John would not be held responsible for any debts/credit due in the name of Sarah, shortly after he went to the USA with his surviving two children, subsequent census returns are all in America and his wife is noted as Ann(ie) Wakefield Goulson.
    So did he dump Sarah?

I can't find anything definite in census etc on Sarah Glen. Loads of possible mistranscriptions though - but on EVERY census! No likely remarriage and if she didn't remarry the only possible 2 deaths would have made her at least 6 years younger than the 1841 census.
Did it say born in county in 1841?
Chrissie passed away in January 2020.

I'm fairly sure she was born in Bottesford, Leics, her father was Edward, when he was buried in 1864 he was recorded as " 40 years Parish Clerk of Bottesford"

Ancaster does throw up Goulson/Gulson names, I have yet to make a link between the families but there is an early 1700's marriage in Boston where the name is Goulson, at remarriage in the mid 1700's it becomes Gulson and probably links to a pub in the area.

Mid 1800's there are records for a marriage of a couple in both spellings and the hubby was a blacksmith, birth certs for two of the children are also in both variant spellings, parents details on both certs match, dad registered one and mum the other, both marked with a cross so perhaps they couldn't read the entry and see a possible error.

Can't quite make out her birth place 1851 or can you make it Granby at a push!

Sorry I seem to have hijacked with Haynes :o

Thanks Elaine, I did visit the church a year or three ago on a trip to the area (Bingham, Ropsley and Heckington amongst the other places in the area).

I never really looked at the Haynes as John went to America so I followed him there (it's well documented as they were a founding family). What happened to Sarah is a mystery and the news article I found this week throws a whole new light on things.

Eight years down the line and still not sure what happened to Sarah but something just popped up

The marriage cert shows John to be a blacksmith and resident at Belvoir at the time

                            A son, John,
                            b 06 Oct 1844
                            Belvoir Stables, Grantham, Lincolnshire
                            d. 27 May 1845
                            Belvoir, Leicestershire

In March 1846 a newspaper advert "To be disposed of, the good will of an extensive farriery business with a first rate connection in the Vale of Belvoir. Any person taking the same can be accomodated on the land lately used in the said business" Apply S Goulson, Thoroton, near Orston, Notts.

There isn't another S Goulson in the tree at that time. I wonder?
