  • Was she the Mother ?

Lydia Lazarus witness.jpgMy Great Great Grandmother Susan/Esther Joel married Abraham Isaac Guttentag/Abraham Rose in 1857 then again in 1860

Witnesses on her first Marriage were Lydia Lazarus and her Sister Julia

I have never found Susans Birth or where she was in 1851 but always thought she was the illigitimate Daughter of Lydia and a Coleman Joel.

Lydia is living with them on all census after their marriage

Thanks to Elaine now have the 1857 Marriage on Ancestry

interesting thing is Witnesses Lydia (Joel) which is crossed out Lazarus and her Sister Julia

Would you say Lydia was her Mother ? and why was Joel crossed out

    Thanks

I can't enlarge the image enough to read it clearly, but it seems Lydia marked rather than signed.

Perhaps the vicar asked, or was told, she was Susan Joel's mother so wrote Lydia Joel. When Julia signed, perhaps he realised he'd made an error so altered it appropriately, or so he thought.

ETA I've now seen the original and see Julia also made her mark - however, I still think he probably assumed Lydia was a Joel, which does suggest she could have been the mother. Do you know that Julia was Susan's sister?

I've just gone over the family again and am now convinced Lydia was her Mother.
