It does look like "gasser", but not rats - maybe head or road.

He's a factory overlooker in 1851, so that doesn't help.

lol!! Jay that made me laugh out loud!!.. it does look like Gasser doesn't it.

if it helps in 1814 he was a cotton spinner and in 1830 he was a labourer.. (taken from parish records of his childrens baptisms)

            The Silk industry employed 'Gassers'

            Debbs

Gassed thread is mercerized cotton or silk thread that has been exposed
very rapidly to a hot gas flame. This process removes the fuzz and excess
            lint on the thread,

                ooh eck!!

Cotton Yarn Gasser: de-fumigated raw cotton prior to use in the textile industry. Raw cotton from India was fumigated with methyl bromide to preserve it from pests.

                not a very nice job!!!

A glossary of definitions for old occupations, historic job titles, trades and professions beginning with C. This page lists the old jobs I have identified so far beginning with the letter C, part 10.

Didn't really think it deciphered as rats, but being a country girl I have had the odd "rat catcher" climb into my tree, as it were.
(However, as far as I know, my rat catchers would have used dogs, sticks and traps, and not chemicals:D)
