  • Bit of a puzzler re James Diffey/Deffey/Diffort

I have found the banns for Mary Ann Eliza Lindo & James Diffort

    13th March 1842
    20th March 1842
    27th March 1842

Both of this parish St marys Newington

    I then found this:

Mary Ann Eliza Lindo & James Diffey

    10th July 1842
    17th July 1842
    24th July 1842

    Again at St Marys Newington

    Then I find this:

Mary Ann Eliza Lindo & James Deffey

    29th Jan 1843
    5th Feb 1843
    12th Feb 1843

    Still at St Marys Newington.

3 different spellings but obviously the same man. Cannot find an actual marriage and then I found this death record:

    Name: James Diffey
    Birth: abt 1820
    Death: abt 1843
    Vital: 17 Apr 1843

Mary Ann Eliza Lindo was born in 1822 so his age would be about right but the area was Greenwich. My hunch is that it is him as quite an unusual name. BUT anyone have any idea as to why all these banns being read??!!

I also cannot find a trace of her after the 1841:

LOL .... she was trying to drag him to the altar but he kept ducking out??

Alternatively he was already ill and was not well enough to attend the wedding.

It is always wise not to assume there is a marriage just because the banns have been read - even when they have been read several times!

LOL Anne, my thoughts exactly! My hunch is that he was ill and they kept having to postpone the wedding and then the poor guy died aged just 23.

someone on Ancestry has her dying in aug 1868 but the only Lindo to die in that quarter is her brother James, so am not sure where they got that info from as they have her without a spouse so assume they have her dying as a Lindo

I do hope that James wasn't the love of her life and she settled for second best with Thomas.....

I have a couple who had 3 lots of banns over several years - something like 1825, 1827 and 1828 - in 2 different parishes. The groom was a widower in the 1st two, and a bachelor in the final one, and also in the wedding (they did eventually make it to the altar).

Quite what was going on there I don't know!

Thanks for that Jackie, that explains the death in Greenwich, I did wonder if it was him but now am sure. Probably smallpox or something very contagious, hence the hospital ship away from London. I recently discovered thanks to Val a great aunt who died on one of those ships and she had smallpox

Very very sad, poor guy. At least Mary went on to find love again.

this is what is frustrating, we can find out the facts BUT their reasons for doing things sometimes remains unsolved
