  • Arthur and George Elmer, Norfolk early 1800's Census

    Via freereg I have just found two baptisms at North Elmham to a Robert & Mary Elmer;

    14 Jan 1802, Arthur
    27 Jul 1804, George

    There is a Robert and Mary having children from 1789 to 1798 at North Elmham, Mary died in 1807 whilst Robert died pre 1841.

    There are no marriage or burials in the area for Arthur and George, do they appear on a census anywhere please?

      I think I've found George on the 1861 census Piece 1248 Folio 28 Page 9. His address is Leicester Square, South Creake, Docking, occupation "Farmer Bailiff Of 258 Acres Employing 4 Men & 2###", age 54 born 1807. He is down as being "unmarried". On the original transcript, it says he was born in N. Elmham. The land owner is a George Belding / Bilding, and your George was down as lodger.

        Thanks Elaine

        I know there were two Elmer familes, the "other" one had an Arthur and George but are a decade or so behind my lot (likely they are all related but I haven't found the link). George, Robert and Mary Ann are also names from earlier and later generations in my direct line so there is a chance that Arthur is part of my lot.

        Possible death ref for Arthur;

        Mar 1869, Elmer Arthur age 68. King's Lynn. 4b 251

            Thanks SammiH

            Two deaths in 1863, one in Bury St Edmunds, the other in Thetford, farm bailiff is an occupation for others in the family too.

            I'm thinking these two could be later children to Robert and Mary that I didn't know about, the names, ages and place certainly fit, as said before Mary died 1807.

              I know you said Robert died pre 1841 but on that census there is a Robert Elmer aged 75 living with John Elmer & family in North Elmham.

                Oh, wonder if that John maybe a son then as Robert/Mary had the twin boys in 1793, never did find a census return for him but I believe he died in 1876, possible baptisms of children born to John and Mary Middleage/Middleditch appear interesting......
