  • Bachelors and Spinsters

Hi just a quick question, what does "opt" and "unk" mean after a bachelor or spinster's name on a Parish Record?

I've tried googling it without much success.

    Geoff.

I would think it was "otp" meaning "of this parish". The other abbreviation may be "unknown" meaning the parish of the bride or groom was unknown. That seems unlikley in a marriage record though - perhaps they are transcriptions and the transcriber has put unknown if no parish is mentioned?

Thanks, it's really rather obvious isn't it . I think I'll put it down to a "senior moment" and hope nobody noticed.

Don't worry Geoff - we all have them. The only silly question is the one left unasked!
