Hi
I am trying to solve a bit of a mystery so if anyone is bored they might like to have a go at finding out if Frank Barnes was in any way related to the Griffiths’ family.
Frank Barnes was born in St Pancras in 1835, parents Edward (wheelwright) & Anne Maria. He had 2 brothers James born 1831 & Edwin born 1833 & a sister Jane born in 1837.
I have found Frank in 1841 with his parents & in 1851 with his widowed mother.
I next pick him up in 1901 & although retired he gives his former occupation as Deputy Controller of accounts, public works in India, so this possibly explains why I can’t find him after 1851.
In 1901 Frank age 65 says that he is married & Ancestry have very kindly given him a wife named Mary Emma Cane but the image shows Frank living alone at no 21 Linden Gardens, Chiswick & Mary Emma Cane (husband absent) living at no 22 Linden Gardens.
Fast forward 10 years & Frank Barnes (at 21) & the Cane family (at 22) are still living in Linden Gardens.
1911 Frank Barnes age 75 still says he is married & his former occupation the same as the previous census.
Frank has three visitors staying with him as follows.
Florence Griffiths age 37, single, dressmaker, own account, at home, born Chiswick
Frank Hector Clarence Griffiths age 9 born Chiswick
Daisy Violet Griffiths age 4 born Chiswick.
I presume that Florence is the mother of Frank & Daisy.
Frank Barnes died on 2nd February 1915 while still living at 21 Linden Gardens.
Probate was granted to Nellie Griffiths, spinster on 25th February 1915. Effects £60 10s
The post war electoral registers from 1918 show that the Cane family were still at 22 Linden Gardens but the occupants of no 21 were named as Hodgson.
Is it possible that Frank Barnes was the father of the Griffiths children? They were only registered as Griffiths so I assume that no father would be named on the certificates.
Was Florence & Nellie from the Probate Index the same person? Can anyone find a Florence or a Nellie Griffiths born c1874 who was born in Chiswick?
Any help much appreciated
Moggie
