  • Frank Barnes & the Griffiths

    Hi
I am trying to solve a bit of a mystery so if anyone is bored they might like to have a go at finding out if Frank Barnes was in any way related to the Griffiths’ family.

Frank Barnes was born in St Pancras in 1835, parents Edward (wheelwright) & Anne Maria. He had 2 brothers James born 1831 & Edwin born 1833 & a sister Jane born in 1837.
I have found Frank in 1841 with his parents & in 1851 with his widowed mother.

I next pick him up in 1901 & although retired he gives his former occupation as Deputy Controller of accounts, public works in India, so this possibly explains why I can’t find him after 1851.
In 1901 Frank age 65 says that he is married & Ancestry have very kindly given him a wife named Mary Emma Cane but the image shows Frank living alone at no 21 Linden Gardens, Chiswick & Mary Emma Cane (husband absent) living at no 22 Linden Gardens.
Fast forward 10 years & Frank Barnes (at 21) & the Cane family (at 22) are still living in Linden Gardens.

1911 Frank Barnes age 75 still says he is married & his former occupation the same as the previous census.
Frank has three visitors staying with him as follows.
Florence Griffiths age 37, single, dressmaker, own account, at home, born Chiswick
Frank Hector Clarence Griffiths age 9 born Chiswick
Daisy Violet Griffiths age 4 born Chiswick.
I presume that Florence is the mother of Frank & Daisy.

Frank Barnes died on 2nd February 1915 while still living at 21 Linden Gardens.
Probate was granted to Nellie Griffiths, spinster on 25th February 1915. Effects £60 10s
The post war electoral registers from 1918 show that the Cane family were still at 22 Linden Gardens but the occupants of no 21 were named as Hodgson.

Is it possible that Frank Barnes was the father of the Griffiths children? They were only registered as Griffiths so I assume that no father would be named on the certificates.
Was Florence & Nellie from the Probate Index the same person? Can anyone find a Florence or a Nellie Griffiths born c1874 who was born in Chiswick?

    Any help much appreciated
    Moggie

Hi this is my first time using this site, my sister and I are descendants of James Barnes, the brother of Frank Barnes. We haven't got info on the Griffiths it's a puzzle ! We do have a tree and a picture of James plus 2 letters from Edwin to James. Do you have anything ? Was the Griffiths problem solved ?

      Hi
I had forgotten about this thread. I posted the query on behalf of a friend & as you can see nobody was able to solve the mystery of the Griffiths' family. I did suggest that my friend get a copy of Frank Barnes' will to see if just maybe he claimed Daisy & Frank as his children but as far as I know my friend never did this.

                    Hi Jacky
I haven't heard from my friend since I suggested that she get a copy of Frank Barnes will so I presume she didn't do this. I lost all my saved emails last year when Talktalk went into meltdown after the hacking fiasco which was very annoying as I had no way of contacting several people. From memory my friend was interested in Daisy Violet Griffiths although I can't remember the exact details.

It looks as if Frank Barnes was married ( from the marriage that Elaine has found) but he could still have fathered the Griffiths children & wasn't in a position to marry Florence if indeed she was the mother of Daisy & Frank.

Hi Elaine thank you for the information, we will be adding it to the Barnes family tree. Have one question, Edward Barnes wheelwright married in 1827 in St Pancras, 1841 census he and his wife Anna Marie state they are not from the district, Edward died in 1850 therefore we have no idea where he was born, any ideas ? Or will this always be our brick wall ! Anna Marie is believed to have come from Bath
                      regards Jacky

I can see one tree has him as Edward Fobert Acton Barnes, I put the full name in as a search and the Fobart Acton does come up

have you come across this full name for Edward?

Hi Elaine the info we have which was done by a Barnes descendant in New Zealand is that James Barnes lied on his marriage certificate, his father was Edward Barnes wheelwright. All the facts seem to bear this out, we will look more closely into this, but we do have letters from James brother Edwin who was disappointed with James because he had deserted his wife and child in the uk. We are the descendants of the deserted daughter Jane Lizzie. We think James was trying to make himself a more attractive suitor for Emily Mason !
                          Regards Jacky

                              Hi Elaine
thank you for the info on Frank, haven't had much time to look at it all properly been a bit busy. Looked at Mary Emma she was an actress too but can see no connection apart from the fact that Franks nephew had been married to the soprano Leonora Brahams. My sister and I are both working on this, if only James hadn't been a fibber grrrr !
                              Regards Jacky
