  • Master 'Frand' Smith

    Hi all,

I have a copy of a 1911 census that I got from FMP (can't find it on Ancestry) and I am really struggling to read a name!!

It has been transcribed as Frand Smith but I cannot find any records under that name (don't even think it is a name).

    1911Census-RG14-08-1-46-08146_0185_03.jpg

Can anyone read it please? I think that there is an apostrophe after the first letter but not sure?? Confused!
    Lauren =)

Well it does look like F'rand - but I can't see any birth registrations which look as if they might fit.

Lauren, have you looked at the census entry on the previous page - if you are viewing on FMP then you need to go back two pages.
There is another Smith family there and the head of the household is Frank. The F is written with what I would describe as an additional stroke to it, which is almost identical to the apostrophe on your entry.
I think what we are seeing as an apostrophe on your entry is just the way the letter F has been written.

Doesn't help find him in the birth registration though!

Does it say where he was born Elaine? I'm wondering about Ferdinand?

Oxfordshire is one of the counties that hasn't yet been transcribed on Ancestry.

I can find it on FMP - 1911 census - but no luck with a birth reg - just Francis and Fredericks.

                    It's not 'Franck' is it?

I think the census form for the entry we are looking at and the Smith family on the previous page have been filled out by the same person. There is a Frank on the previous page which is written quite clearly.

Most likely one to match the marriage is Francis William J Smith born Oxford March 1910 3a 1015

p.s. I doesn't look like Francis though does it. It was the only F birth that came up in Oxford where they got married and lived at the time though.

No help I know but it looks as though they may have gone on to have 4 more children between 1913 to 1921 in Headington

Looks like I was wrong about Oxfordshire.
I clicked on the drop down menu for counties & Oxfordshire wasn't included.

You are right in that Oxfordshire hasn't been indexed yet - I found the page by searching the images using the census reference.

I just thought I would have a look for Jesse's birth and find him with his family to see if it gave any clues and his fathers name was Francis!! I wonder if it could be the Francis birth after all?

It does seem the most likely one Chrissie.

Do any of you have the same problem as me that when trying to write particularly neatly I am more likely to make silly spelling errors? My theory is the person filling in the return was trying to write Frank (short for Francis) and didn't spot that he'd put a d instead of a k.

There are two other possibilities if Daisy went back home to have him (she was born in Headington, Oxfordshire). Dec 1909 Frederick Arthur - Headington 3a 1030 and March 1910 Frederick Henry - Headington 3a 1004
