  • this is a new one on me!!!

received today a birth certificate from 1889:

    Elizabeth Skidmore Born:
    6th November 1889
    5.20am
    8 little ann street

Had to look again to make sure I had seen it right!! Anyone ever had a time of birth on a birth certificate before?

Not usual in England at least, unless she was a twin.

The only time I've seen it is when there are twin births. Is there another birth that could be a twin?

Usually means a twin so check back on the original index ref and click on 'others on the same page'

I have had this on a couple of births with the same Mother I thought it was her being exact I will have to check. If there were twins this makes her story even sadder as they didn't live.

In the very early years of registration, some registrars included times for single births, as they seemed to think they had to include ALL information, but later on, times would indicate a multiple birth.

The GRO once sent a cert along with a photocopy of all the 10 or so entries on that page (they had also phoned me to query the birthplace, unusually kind of them) every single one had birth time as well and not one was a twin. This was Sussex in 1850.
