  • Parish Marriage

Can I confirm that a marriage should normally take place in either the groom's or bride's home parish, looking at the date 1770-75?

I'm trying to find a baptism record from the marrage.

they say marriages traditionally take place in the bride's parish. but i have instances where this is not true.

Yes and no! If by banns it should have taken place in the parish where at least one of them was living, but that may not have been their parish of birth - their parents could have moved there, or they may have gone there themselves for work.

You only have to live in a parish for three weeks in order to marry there. As Judith says, this isn't necessarily the parish where you were born.

If you got a licence you could marry in another parish altogether!! :(
