  • Received in to the congregation.

Have recently come across this in a side column of a baptism record of a 22year old person.

Have been asked what it means but must confess that I do not know!

Can anyone enlighten me as to the meaning please.

It means the person was privately baptised at home or elsewhere. As you can only be baptised once (in the eyes of the established church) then the public cerremony which follows this private baptism is a receiving into the church and congregation. It usually follows shortly after birth but not always.

It might also be the ceremony used when someone was not sure whether they had already been baptised or not.

(Private baptism dedicates the soul to God; receiving into the church dedicates the soul to the church here on earth)

      Thanks for that explaination OC.

I shall know that in future when someone asks me!
