  • Can I have help with records from New York

    Hi all.

I have recently taken out world wide with Ancestry.
I want to find some records about 1940
finding it difficult to work. I do not know the area,
just that it is new york.

Ancestry records do not seem to show as late as 1940
any advice please. Dont want to take another sub anywhere else
    as Ancestry is quite expensive.

    Thanks in advance

    Glenda

I think a lot of USA records are not online and each are kept by the state concerned so maybe you need to search gor the time frame you need to see if they would be public yet - many countries don't allow public access to events less than 70/80/100 years so you do need to check.

as Kyle has said the 1940 US census is due for release 2nd of April I think, then it will be a matter of getting the records transcribed and ready for publication.

As previously described, you must use local repositories of data, and recent data often is not available.

SSDI might be useful, but I rely heavily on obituaries and findagrave to further my research. If your ancestors were in a large city, obituaries are hard to find and contain minimal information (much like London, from what I can tell!)

Glenda.....one of my relatives in the US lives near New York & has done a lot of research into her various families there. I can ask her for general tips (don't know if they'd be any different to what you're getting here) & ask her if she'd be able to do anything more with the details.

              Will get back to you

You haven't mentioned which part of NY - New York City, or some other part of the state? There are online newspapers for the northern area (Buffalo area and more)

Also, Ancestry does have the NY Times online - you may need to specifically search it (card catalog and drill down to NY, then look for Historical Newspapers)

If it's a common name, and you don't know a time period, it can be tedious.
