I've never been able to get my head round this - how would I go about finding whether someone who died in Oxford in 1974 left a will?

    Thanks

what you need to do is get the persons date of death/place of death (death cert is ideal) then you can apply to the wills and probate place at york (or is it leeds now?) and give them the money and they will search for you I believe. Is there a probate office in Oxford? might be better ringing them and querying with them.

Okay, thanks Julie, I'll go for the death cert first. I think there is a probate office in Oxford -ooh yes there is, I'll have a look on their website.

        Thanks for the info

Are wills & probates public records, or are they shielded by privacy laws with some time limit?

They are a matter of public record, and cost £6 for a copy.

Probated Wills of dead people are in the public domain.

What I meant was that someone's Will only enters the public domain when probate is granted.
