have a birth registered in 1945 but it says Mothers maiden name is ***** or ******does this mean the parents did not marry ?

So child could be, for example
John Smith
son of
Mary Smith (nee) Jones, formerly (i.e. first married name) Harbottle
if I've got that the right way around.
Think it's the same that I've seen on marriage registers where if the bride has been married before it sometimes puts both her surnames (maiden and first marriage surnames).

Hi Val,
One of my great Aunts childrens birth is registered like this. In my Grt Aunts case it was because she was born Ann R, but her father died when she was a baby, her mother married mr B and Ann was then known as Ann B. On her childrens birth registrations it has both of the surnames, it also lists both surnames on Ann's marriage registration.
