So child could be, for example

        John Smith
        son of
Mary Smith (nee) Jones, formerly (i.e. first married name) Harbottle

if I've got that the right way around.

Think it's the same that I've seen on marriage registers where if the bride has been married before it sometimes puts both her surnames (maiden and first marriage surnames).

I don't think you have to take a marriage cert with you when you register a child...

It could be that the mother was known by two names. Some people are.

                      Hi Val,

One of my great Aunts childrens birth is registered like this. In my Grt Aunts case it was because she was born Ann R, but her father died when she was a baby, her mother married mr B and Ann was then known as Ann B. On her childrens birth registrations it has both of the surnames, it also lists both surnames on Ann's marriage registration.

hi Kelly this ladies mother only married the once as far as I and Chrissie can see and that was after this girl was born.
I wondered whether the father just let the mother put his name on the birth ?
Just noticed who you are nice to see you .
